6:00 pm - What's the BuZZ?

6:06 pm - Mark Jeavons - Writer/Director The Boy with a thorn in His Side

Mark Jeavons is an up and coming filmmaker in the UK, with hundreds of ideas and countless productions in the pipeline. He is a talented writer/director, but also has skills as a producer, editor and camera operator. A lifelong self-confessed geek, Mark's burning passion has always been to make his own films. In 2002 Mark enrolled in a City & Guilds course in TV & Video Production where he had the chance to write and direct several short films from 8 - 15 minutes in drama or comedy/drama style. All these short films are available to download from his website at sepiafilms.co.uk.

The Boy with a Thorn in His Side was self-produced on a budget of £25000. The film was shot on DV over 17 days in the Wolverhampton & Birmingham area of the UK with a crew of over 10 people working on the production. When the script was complete in February 2004 it went straight into pre-production for four intense months. Shooting began on July 31st for a week. Then after a week break there was another week's shoot a third week shoot at the end of August. The editing was done by the writer/director and took three months.

6:32 pm - Mark Kennedy and Chad House - Co-founders Celtx and Greyfirst Corp

Mark Kennedy CEO

Mark has a legal, science and business background and Chad is an expert system architect and specialist in MIS. In late 2000, they agreed to form a company that would be at the forefront of Internet technologies. Greyfirst has several Internet-based software projects on the market – some for third parties, a couple of its own. Most of these, like Celtx, are in beta. Mark has worked in heavy industry and taught high school science. Prior to starting Greyfirst, Mark worked as a lawyer with a private firm where he specialized in commercial litigation.

Chad House - Co-founder, Principal System Architect

Chad House possesses expertise in open source software application development and system architecture. Chad has been an active user, tester, and developer of Mozilla technologies since that project's inception. Immediately prior to joining Greyfirst, Chad was Director of Web Development for an Internet start-up, where he was responsible for the implementation of the company's Web services. Chad has also acted as systems analyst. Chad earned his Bachelor of Commerce from Memorial University, where he specialized in information systems and operations research.

Celtx was started to solve a specific problem. "Why", asked the founders of Greyfirst, the Newfoundland based company that started the project, “was the majority of what takes place during the pre-production of film, video and TV conducted as if the Internet never existed? Why, even though digital technologies had transformed the rest of the industry, was there so much reliance on paper and unwieldy three ring binders? And why, in the aspects that were being completed using a computer, were there so many different applications each using their own proprietary format?

The resulting software, called Celtx, provides the film, video and TV industries with an Internet compliant tool for writing, managing and producing media content. Celtx enables writers and media producers to do their work using a thoroughly modern and Internet intelligent software application.

Celtx provides a new way for writers and other creative people working in the pre-production side of the business to do their work. Celtx enables writers to work using as modern a tool as the ones offered to people in post-production. The same software can then be used to share the project with others and develop a media rich breakdown. "Finally, Celtx completes the equation - enabling people to start and finish their film and TV projects using digital technologies."

An open source software company, Greyfirst uses open source-friendly business models, providing free, commercial-quality software products that include basic Web services offered at no charge, which at the option of users can be supplemented with subscription-based, advanced applications accessed through a server.
