Adobe After Effects: Let's Make Confetti

Chapter: Paint, Draw and Design

Topic: Paint or Draw on Video

Kathlyn Lindeboom gives users a look at some of the tools in Cult Effects 1.5. This third tutorial in a series uses Cult Effects CE Paint along with 1.5’s new ‘Wiggle’ Controls. In this tutorial, we’ll make confetti. Cult Effects Paint is the new Vector Paint in Adobe After Effects 5. With Cult Effects Paint, you can paint directly in After Effects. It is a vector based, nondestructive tool that is useful for all kinds of painting from matte touch-ups to animating signatures. And now with the new “wiggle controls” feature, it’s just for having fun.

Apple Final Cut Pro: Motion Paths and the Bezier Handle in FCP

Chapter: Compositing Tools and Techniques

Topic: Motion Control

[Written for FCP 2 but still relevant] We have seen images move across and around the screen in curved paths, speeding up and slowing down in graceful motion. This animation process can be done in FCP. We can create flowing motion with speed changes by working with motion paths and Bezier handles.

Adobe After Effects: Matrix Text in Pseudo 3D – simulating layers of moving text using Elements of Anarchy

Chapter: Visual and Creative Effects

Topic: Reproducing TV or Film Effects

Text Matrix can certainly do the ‘Matrix’ effect, but it can produce a variety of other effects. By playing around with the color blending, and speed controls, Jim Tierney demonstrates how to produce a psuedo-3D effect. Giving the impression that each stream of text is on it’s own layer moving independently. Creating a sort of multiplane look. The color creates some contrast between the streams, and the speed difference helps sells the effect. You need Elements of Anarchy for this one. If you don’t have it, download a demo and try it out.

Film Like

Chapter: Visual and Creative Effects

Topic: Film Look

How to make pictures shot on video look more like film” is probably the single most frequently asked question of all. It’s generally implicit in the question that you’re NOT asking how to make a television screen look like a movie screen, but rather how to make stuff shot on video look like something that was shot on movie film and then transferred to video. In that case, video doesn’t look like film for a number of reasons, of which these are key…

Adobe After Effects: Flying through Clouds from Outer Space

Chapter: Visual and Creative Effects

Topic: Space

This tutorial will show you how to simulate flying through a cloud bank using After Effects 5 new 3-D capabilities. We will primarily be working with the layers Z position, so we won’t even scratch the surface of After Effects 5 new capabilities. To create the clouds we will use After Effects Fractal Noise plug-in and Boris Clouds plug-in, which may be found in Boris AE and Boris Continuum. If you have your own way for making your clouds it should also work.

Adobe After Effects: Use a sweeping beam of light to reveal a logo (or text)

Chapter: Titling

Topic: Glows, Blurs, Rays or Streaks

Mark Simpson uses The Foundry ‘Tinderbox’ plug-in T_Beam filter to sweep a narrow beam across a logo, eventually widening the beam to reveal the entire logo. [The After Effects Beam Filter, or filters from Boris Continuum Complete will also work for this effect.] At the end of the animation, the beam widens to reveal the entire logo. This is a fairly simple task for this fast rendering effect.
