Adobe After Effects: Here Comes the Sun – Part 1: Layer offset in After Effects

Chapter: Visual and Creative Effects

Topic: Visual Style

This is the first installment in a multi-part tutorial/feature/review that looks at how you can create (or recreate) a rotating star for your next After Effects project. We’ll begin by looking at a sequence of images that will not import as a sequence and how you can use the Sequence Layer option to correct this problem. Recently I’ve begun a project that will require an image of a sun to appear above a person’s head. The sun will need to rotate, slowly at first, then progressively get faster and faster until it becomes a blur of light. To enhance the illusion that it is a ‘realistic’ sun, light rays will be added. To complicate things the sun will have to grow in size over time, so the light rays will have to compensate.

Who Shot This !@%#$@? Communicate with shooters so you won't be saying this during your edit sessions

Chapter: Image Acquisition

Topic: Shoot for Post

If you’ve been editing video for a while, or even for a few minutes, you can vouch for the truth of that old saying, “garbage in/garbage out” (GIGO). If the footage isn’t there, you could be in store for an edit session that could be characterized as The Day From Hell. In this editorial/tutorial, let’s take a look at ways to avoid this dreaded situatio

Preproduction of Audio for Video or Audio Streaming

Chapter: Audio

Topic: Advanced Techniques

Preproduction of Audio for web-streaming or intranet distribution is often overlooked in the streaming preparation processes. Often times, videographers intent on placing media on the inter or intra-net simply use tools built into the applications that are being used for editing media for the web. If these are the only tools available, then little can be done to prepare the audio for the web without going through multiple renders and loss of video quality. The processing described in the next paragraphs apply equally to audio only, as well as audio for video.

You must never kid yourself that you don’t need to practice your presentation out loud using all your equipment and in the clothes you will be wearing. You may think you know how to use the technology. You may think you know where you will stand so you can see your laptop or the screen. You may think you can use that remote mouse you bought yesterday. But until you actually practice the speech, you don’t really know how you will give it.

Service Contracts are Easy to Sell: Sell Job Security. Yet even some of the best sales people have a hard time selling them

Chapter: Business

Topic: Sales and Marketing

Service contracts (especially proactive ones) are much more profitable than selling products. I won’t go into the details about how profitable they are as I wrote a three part series on service contracts a couple of years ago with the help of two of the industry’s service gods: Barry Haligan and Jay Rogina. You can refer back to that article later, but rest assured that even a poorly run service department is almost always more profitable that a well run sales department. Margins for service run between 50-80%!

Fix it in Post – Reader Response

Topic: Shoot for Post

I really needed to spout off in my previous editorial Fix it in Post, mainly because I am sick and tired of those who wish to take the easy way out and try and fix it in the edit. From the overwhelming responses I’ve received over the last few days, it looks like there are many of you out there who feel the same way.
