Two new HDV Studio Decks from Sony

Sony has revealed the HVR-M25U and HVR-M15U for HDV 1080i and DV recording and playback. Both decks offer HDV 1080i, DVCAM™ and DV SP recording and play back capability and are compatible with mini-size DV cassettes as well as standard-size cassettes that allow more than four hours of HDV recording with compatible tapes. In addition, both decks have a down-conversion function from HD to SD and are switchable between 60 and 50 Hz (NTSC/PAL) to provide full flexibility depending on production needs.

Other shared features include the ability to copy external timecode through the "HDV/DV in TC" feature and a range of connectivity options, including the iLINK (IEEE-1394/FireWire) digital interface, component output, S-Video I/O, composite I/O, and analog audio I/O. Both models accommodate the standard (full) size version of Sony’s DigitalMaster™ professional videotape, which the company recommends for professional HDV applications. The standard size tape offers up to 276 minutes (4.6 hours) of HDV recording time.

The HVR-M15U model is compact, with a small footprint that allows it to be unobtrusively added to existing work environments. Uniquely, it can be placed either horizontally or vertically.

The HVR-M25U deck adds a 2.7" LCD 16:9 panel (same as on the new HDR-HC3 Handycam it seems) for increased user convenience and an HDMI output for connections to consumer television sets.

The model’s Edge Crop adjustment helps operators adjust edge crop areas manually while down-converting in this mode. Duplicate Plus is a dubbing function that duplicates work tapes with the same time-code that the original tape contains through the i.LINK connection.

It also has a Custom Repeat feature and 1080/60i to 720/60p conversion capabilities but only through the analog component and HDMI outputs.

Blackmagic Design releases Universal Binary of HDLink Software

Blackmagic Design’s HDLink drivers and HDLink Utility software is now available in a Universal Binary format for PPC and Intel Macs using the one installer.

HDLink is a converter box that takes Standard or High Definition SDI outputs from video or editing equipment and converts the signal to DVI for display on LCD monitors like Apple’s Cinema Display line.

The upgrade is free to registered HDLink owners (and useless to everyone else). HDLink is available for US$695 from authorized Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide.

wondertouch unveils Professional Emitter Libraries

The Pro Emitter Libraries for Particle Illusion are a collection of 180 particleIllusion 3.0 emitters arranged into six themed libraries.

Each of the six individual libraries contains 30 emitters that feature sophisticated, complex and ready-to-use particle effects covering popular themes including real-world effects such as explosions, auroras, and breaking glass; motion graphics and artistic backgrounds; text and abstract effects – a range of effects that every particleIllusion 3.0 user will find immediately useful.

The Professional Emitter Libraries (Pro Emitters) have been developed by three digital artists – Tom Granberg, Sasha Milica and Phalkanubba Rath – who’s work clearly exhibits outstanding command of the particleIllusion software application.

Each of the six libraries contains 30 emitters. Each library can be purchased individually for US$30 or the collection together for US$175. The new libraries add to the already impressive selection of more than 1400 different preset emitters that ship with particleIllusion 3.0 (as well as the additional emitters that the company releases free-of-charge each month) with a set of extremely high-quality particle emitters.

The six libraries are Abstract, Text and Logo, Artistic Backgrounds, Graphics and Distortions, Eclectic 01 and Eclectic 02. Looking at the preview movies it’s hard to believe that these are "just" particle emitters – who’d have thought a bullet shot through glass, leaving realistic hole, could be done with particle emitters!

More information, preview movies, stills and artist biographies are on the product page. Definitely worth a look for any professional motion graphic artist.

The Professional Emitter Libraries are compatible only with wondertouch particleIllusion 3.0, on both Windows and Mac OS X.

Chapter: Paint, Draw and Design

Topic: Tips and Techniques

This is one that threw me for a loop for a while. I rely pretty heavily on Adobe ImageReady for my batch image processing, working almost exclusively with droplets I’ve created over the years. But sometimes these droplets need to be updated. No trouble usually: Just make the changes to the original action, and recreate your droplet from that. But what happens if you no longer have the original action?
