Final Cut Studio goes Universal

With two days to spare, Apple have met the deadline revealed at MacWorld, to have their flagship Final Cut Studio application in Universal form by “the end of March’.

The Universal cross-grade (with many bug fixes but no new features) for owners of Final Cut Studio is just $49, but there are generous cross-grades to help bring all Pro Apps Users up to the Universal Level – from just $99 to take Final Cut Pro 5 to Final Cut Studio. These cross-grade offers are available until the end of 2006. We expect that all future upgrades, including any revealed at NAB next month, will require a Final Cut Studio starting point.

IMPORTANT NOTE:In order to run in Universal on an Intel-Mac all plug-ins must also be configured as Universal Binaries. Fortunately the Calligraphy Plug-ins – Title 3D, Title Crawl, etc have been converted to Universal Binary form. FXScirpt-based plug-ins will automatically run under Intel without extra work from the developers.
Other After Effects plug-ins do not workin Final Cut Pro 5.1 on Intel machines according to the release notes.
Final Cut Pro 5.1 Universal will not work on an Intel Mac Mini because of the integrated graphics chipset, according to a new Knowledge Base Article.
