Apple OS X: Mac OS X: How to type special characters, including Symbol or Zapf Dingbat fonts

Chapter: Titling

Topic: Basic Skills

Using Unicode in Mac OS X increases compatibility, but it may change the way you are accustomed to typing special characters. Many Mac OS X applications use Unicode, a single, world-wide character set that works with most of the world’s languages. The advantages of using Unicode include easy interchange of data with users of other operating systems, and not needing to know which font to use to display text in other languages correctly.

Avid Media Composer: New Trim Technique: Two Tails or Two Heads

Chapter: Editing

Topic: Trimming

You are well into the edit and need to shorten clip B/2X in the above sequence. Unfortunately, the duration of the scene is already locked. What are your options? Well, you could use a dual roller trim at the edit point between B/2-X and B/1-A, but that would change the head frame edit on B/1-A, which is undesirable. Alternatively you could slide B/1-A, but that would change the head frame edit on BA/3-X, which is also undesirable.
In Media Composer version 3.0 we’ve provided a new trimming technique that not only solves this problem, but many other similar problems

Apple DVD Studio Pro: Three steps to burn a DVD with DVD Studio Pro

Chapter: DVD Authoring

Topic: DVD Production Workflow

To often I hear people say the output a movie out of Final Cut Pro, and Burn a DVD using iDVD. The common reason for doing so, is that it is more difficult to burn a DVD out of DVD Studio Pro. I disagree. If you drag directly from the Finder into the open Track in the Graphical view when DVD Studio Pro opens, set the track as the first play, and hit burn, it is a grand total of 3 clicks and seven seconds. DVD Studio Pro can be much more complex, but it can also be very simple.

Apple Final Cut Pro: Using the Extend tool to improve workflow

Chapter: Editing

Topic: Basic Skills

The Extend tool in Final Cut Pro is often overlooked. As you develop your use of the keyboard short cuts in the Final Cut Studio, this is certainly one to remember. For those of you not familiar with the Extend tool it extends or retracts the end of the clip to the play head. After moving the play head to the new desired duration of the clip, as long as the end of the clip is highlighted, you only need to press the E key to bring the duration of the clip in sync with the play head.
