Panasonic Delivers AG-AF100, the Affordable Large Imager Cinema Camera

Fulfilling the holiday wishes of filmmakers worldwide, Panasonic Solutions Company began deliveries of the AG-AF100, the industry’s first professional micro 4/3-inch video camcorder optimized for high-definition video recording. Available now at a suggested list price of $4,995, the AF100 offers a new level of affordability for HD motion image quality.

Targeted at the film and video production communities, the AF100 delivers film-like shallow depth of field and the wider field of view of a large imager, with the flexibility and cost advantages of a growing line of professional quality, industry-standard micro 4/3-inch lenses, filters, and adapters. The full HD 1080/720 production camera offers superior video handling, native 1080/24p recording, variable frame rates, professional audio capabilities, and compatibility with SDHC and SDXC media.

The AF100 incorporates a large 4/3-inch, 16:9 MOS imager (with an imaging area just slightly smaller than 35mm cinema film) that minimizes skew with fast imager scanning, and incorporates an optical low pass filter for elimination of aliasing and moiré. The camcorder records 1080 at 60i, 50i, 30P, 25P (Native) and 24P (Native), and 720 at 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p and 24p native in AVCHD’s highest-quality PH mode (maximum 24Mbps). The AF100 also records in AVCCAM’s HA (17Mbps) and HE (6Mbps) modes, 1080i only. Ready for global production standards, the camcorder is 60Hz and 50Hz switchable. Equipped with an interchangeable micro 4/3-inch lens mount, the AF100 can utilize an array of low-cost, widely-available still camera lenses as well as film-style lenses with fixed focal lengths and primes.

Variable frame rates (VFR) are available in 1080p, selectable in 20 steps from 12p to 60p at 60Hz and 20 steps from 12p to 50p at 50Hz. The camcorder has a built-in stereo microphone and features two mic/lines, switchable XLR inputs with +48V Phantom Power capability. It can record 48-kHz/16-bit two-channel digital audio (in PH mode only) and supports LPCM/Dolby-AC3 in any of the modes.

This newest Panasonic AVCCAM camcorder is the first to enjoy the benefits of advanced SDXC media card compatibility in addition to existing SDHC card support. SDXC is the newest SD memory card specification that supports memory capacities above 32GB and up to 2TB. With two SD slots for continuous recording, the AF100 can record up to 12 hours on two 64GB SDXC cards in PH mode, with automatic clip spanning across the two cards. The AF100 offers still image capture as two megapixel (1920 x 1080) still images.

The AF100 features switchable FILM CAM and VIDEO CAM modes, with VFR operable in FILM CAM. The camcorder has a wide ISO gain setting range that allows sensitivity to be set between ISO 200 and ISO 3200 (in FILM CAM), or gain adjusted between 18 dB and-6 dB (in VIDEO CAM). It also offers a focus assist that can be used while recording, which is color-on peaking and a focus bar; area focus and area iris functions that facilitate recording when the subject is off-center; two sets of adjustable zebras; two manual black and white balance choices, and preset White Balance at 3200K, 5600K or variable; and a waveform monitor and vectorscope for more accurate monitoring of broadcast safe levels.

Weighing only 3.5 pounds (without lens or battery), the AF100 is packed with high-end features including Dynamic Range Stretch in all modes and frame rates; six built-in, customizable scene files that are exchangeable for quick and easy matching between multiple cameras; seven built-in gamma curves with four selectable color matrices; a built-in optical ND filter; adjustable shutter speed and Syncro-scan function; and a high-resolution, variable angle color LCD monitor and tiltable viewfinder.

Standard professional interfaces include uncompressed 4:2:2, 8 Bit HD-SDI out, HDMI out and USB 2.0. The AF100 records SMPTE timecode and is able to perform timecode synchronizing via the video output seeing timecode in, and has an internal down-converter facilitating output of SD (480/576) signals

Other essential features include a wealth of solid-state recording modes (clip thumbnail display, pre-record;, intervalometer function that can be set for up to 24 hours); three User Buttons that can be programmed with up to 14 functions each; a Smart Battery interface for recording up to four hours with a 5800mA battery (model VW-VBG6PPK); metadata recording; and a wireless infrared remote controller.

Blackmagic Design Announces Major DaVinci Resolve 7.1 Update

Blackmagic Design announced a major update to DaVinci Resolve, a popular high-end color grading system on Mac OS X and Linux.

The new DaVinci Resolve 7.1 now adds DaVinci’s legendary clustered multi GPU processing power to Mac OS X systems when used with a PCI Express expansion chassis. The new DaVinci Resolve 7.1 also includes greater control through upgraded support for Tangent Wave control surfaces and support for the JL Cooper Eclipse CX control surface. New file formats and codes supported in DaVinci Resolve 7.1 include Arri Alexa ARRI RAW, Phantom Cine, high dynamic range OpenEXR and more.

This major update is available today for download from the Blackmagic Design DaVinci website for all existing DaVinci Resolve customers at no charge.

With the new DaVinci Resolve 7.1 update, Mac OS X users can now take advantage of a massive improvement in processing power by installing multiple high performance GPUs. This “super computer” processing power, previously only available on Linux systems, smashes the single GPU limit for a single computer and lets customers increase processing power simply by adding additional GPUs as their businesses grow.

Also supported in the DaVinci Resolve 7.1 update is the ATI 5770 graphics card for the user interface and the Cubix x16 PCI Express expansion chassis for use with multiple GPUs. Support for the expansion chassis allows flexibility to install additional storage, video capture cards, multiple Nvidia Quadro 4000 GPU processing cards, and Red Rocket cards. This means customers get greater cost savings and complete freedom to build high performance color correction systems on Mac OS X.

DaVinci Resolve 7 introduced support for third party control surfaces, and DaVinci Resolve 7.1 expands this support. Now included are more menus on the Tangent Wave control surface including menus for stereoscopic 3D and version control, individual adjustments for curves and image clipping, direct access to stills and memories and new keyer controls for post mixing offsets. DaVinci Resolve 7.1 also adds support for the popular JL Cooper Eclipse CX control surface. Only DaVinci Resolve 7.1 gives colorists a complete range of options from mouse or tablet operation, third party control surfaces and the premium Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve control surface.

As the post production and film industries are rapidly advancing into higher quality digital film production, DaVinci Resolve 7.1 includes a wide range of new file formats and codec support for the latest professional cameras and scanners. New file formats include native real time support for Arri Alexa ARRI RAW and D-21 ARRI RAW , Phantom Cine files, OpenEXR in uncompressed and compressed formats, Sony MPEG-4 SStP (Simple Studio Profile) and Sony XDCAM files in QuickTime format. Because support for real time grading direct from Arri Alexa ARRI RAW files is handled in the GPU, no extra hardware is required. No other color correction system available today supports as many high-end DI file formats for real time color correction on Mac OS X.

DaVinci Resolve 7.1 also includes new Stereoscopic 3D color grading controls, including timeline slip to sync left and right eye, auto left and right eye color matching, pitch and yaw keystone control and side-by-side and line-by-line rendering. This new update adds additional project configurations including improved drop frame timecode support, 720p50 and 720p conforming, 1080p50, 1080p59.94 and 1080p60 monitoring as well as automatic multi project ColorTraceTM support for transferring digital dailies grades.

This new software update adds new user interface displays including clip count display on the color screen primary grading tab, session duration display on the conform screen, a new slate option to show source clip name and additional autosave options. DaVinci Resolve 7.1 also enhances RED grading controls by including REDcolor2 and Adobe 1998 colorspace support, REDgamma2 gammaspace support, automatic camera metadata support for HFlip and VFlip, ganged adjustment of decode settings and support for saving RED metadata in stills for copy and paste.

We have a special holiday program on tap for tonight. Join host Larry Jordan and co-host Mike Horton as they talk with:

Alexis Van Hurkman, Colorist

We spoke with Alexis Van Hurkman, colorist and author, last week about how to setup and equip a color grading suite. This week, we continue our conversation with Alexis with a look at what software to use and how to use it effectively.

– – – A LOOK BACK AT 2010 – – –

As we wrap up another year, it seems appropriate to gather the entire gang around the electronic campfire and take a look back to try to figure out what the heck happened to the last year. The deals, the announcements, the products that made it (and those that didn’t), and all the legal scuffling.

Kick back, relax, and listen in as our gang waxes poetic (or, ah, pontificates portentously). Whatever — you’re gonna have fun listening!

Jonathan Handel, Entertainment Labor Reporter, Hollywood Reporter

Jonathan Handel, entertainment labor reporter for the Hollywood Reporter, covers the legal, union, and labor issues in Hollywood for The Buzz. He looks back on all the strikes, near-strikes, and non-strikes of the past year and tries to figure out who got a hit, and who struck out. One thing we especially what to learn more about is whether, after all the brouhaha surrounding the Screen Actors Guild, whether they came out ahead or behind as this year ends.

Philip Hodgetts, CEO, Intelligent Assistance

Nobody knows technology like Philip Hodgetts, president of Intelligent Assistance. Whether we are talking about codecs (Mike’s personal favorite subject), hot new products, or even products that aren’t even released, Philip takes a look back at 2010 to analyze the hits and the misses. From new cameras, to new software, and lots of interesting releases in-between, one thing Phillip is really good at is explaining how all this stuff fits together, or fall apart.

Bruce Nazarian, The Digital Guy

Bruce Nazarian, the Digital Guy, has his feet in two camps: optical media and music. This week, we asked him to define the highlights of the past year from his perspective and, then, set them to music. Well, OK, maybe we won’t ask him to sing, but after all the noise Blu-ray was making at the beginning of the year, it sure has gone quiet just a few months later. What new trends should we be keeping our eyes on?

Debbie Price, Digital Production Buzz

Debbie Price, event manager for the Digital Production Buzz, is one of the unsung folks behind-the-scenes that makes everything work. She’s been one of the driving forces, along with Laura Peters, behind the Buzz Shout-out, so we invited her on to bring us up-to-date on skyrocketing success of this program. Along with some stats on how the Shout-out! is doing so far, she will also have tips you can use to create your own entry for us to play on The Buzz! Showcase your best work, on the Buzz Shout-Out!

Jessica Sitomer, President, The Greenlight Coach

Jessica Sitomer, president of The Greenlight Coach, is another great person to have on your team. She’s been with us all this year with tips and suggestions on how to find and keep work. She joins us this week with more job-hunting tips and a report card on what she’s learned by watching the Buzz Shout-out. We are also interested in figuring out what were the most successful ways to find work this past year.

Michael Horton, Head Cutter, Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group

Michael Horton, president of the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group, runs one of the largest user groups in the country, along with co-hosting The Buzz. We want to talk with him about his views of the last year from the point of view of everyone that’s actually using all this stuff. (We were going to ask him to sing, but, frankly, we all need a bit more egg nog before we’re ready for that!) Still, The Buzz wouldn’t be the show it is without Mike, and we are grateful!

It’s gonna be a great time, with old and new friends. Make a point to join us!

You can’t find people or interviews like this anywhere else! It’s another fascinating show.
It’s all the information you need now to know what’s coming next!
