Sound Devices Introduces PIX 220 and PIX 240

Sound Devices, experts in portable hard-disk recording for audio, is presenting its first portable video recorder at InfoComm 2011 (Booth 2274). Sound Devices brings its audio recording technology to video with the introduction of the PIX line of recorders, consisting of two products — PIX 220 and PIX 240.

The new PIX 220 and PIX 240 connects to cameras with HDMI and records directly to QuickTime using Apple’s ProRes or optionally, Avid’s DNxHD codec. Since PIX recorders use ProRes and DNxHD, files recorded in the field can be used directly in post-production, making the workflow simple and fast. The PIX 240 adds even more flexibility, with its HD-SDI input and simultaneous HD-SDI and HDMI outputs.

The audio circuitry on the PIX 220 and PIX 240 was based on Sound Devices’ award-winning 7-Series digital audio recorders. The low-noise (-128 dBu EIN), high headroom, high-bandwidth inputs are mic/line switchable and include limiters, high-pass filters and phantom power.

PIX 240 includes a built-in Ambient Clockit time code generator/reader with Genlock output for multi-camera and double-system sound applications. The source time code can be derived from the HD-SDI stream, from an external source, or from the built-in generator in PIX 240. Additional features include digital audio inputs on AES3, and an external eSATAp connection for direct connection to large SATA storage volumes.

Both PIX 220 and PIX 240 include generous five-inch, 800×480 pixel LCD displays. This display is essential in the field and it gives immediate confirmation of recording, playback, audio metering and Setup Menu selections. A side panel rotary control and four front-panel buttons provide quick access to setup options while the large, illuminated, tactile record controls give instant confirmation of recording status.

PIX recorders are built with a metalized, molded carbon-fiber chassis and are powered by external 10-18 VDC or two removable Sony L-battery mount power supplies.

Available from TMS in July 2011, Vault-X combines award-winning XenData6 Workstation software with archive hardware to create an all-in-one solution to provide users with complete connectivity to dramatically improve archiving workflow.

Vault-X key features and benefits include:

  • Complete End-to-End Solution – Vault-X is a turnkey appliance with an internal LTO5 HH drive. The new solution delivers high-performance, reliable archiving to and restoring from LTO data tape using Windows Explorer.
  • Archive and Restore via Drag and Drop – Leveraging XenData6 Workstation software, Vault-X archives to and restores from LTO tape using Windows Explorer and allows the transfer of files to and from LTO by using drag and drop or copy and paste, so files can be easily archived to tape from any accessible logical letter drive or network share. Transfers to and from LTO, can be for individual files, selections of files or complete nested folder structures. For example, a folder structure containing hundreds of project files can be archived to or restored from LTO in one operation.
  • Comprehensive Management of Offline Files – When an LTO tape is ejected from the tape drive, its file contents are remembered by the system, even though the tape is now offline. The user can display the file and folder structure for any offline tape. The software allows searching of the offline archive and it identifies which tape needs to be inserted back into the tape drive to restore that file.
  • Highly Compatible – Vault-X supports Windows and Mac-formatted external storage via eSATA, USB3 and Firewire connections. Files can be archived to tape from any accessible hard disk drive, Mac and PC network drives and, via options, SAN volumes. The solution also includes built-in memory card readers for CF, SD/MMC and memory stick formats.
  • Writes in POSIX tar Format – Files are written to data tape using the open standard POSIX tar format so files can be restored for decades to come using a wide range of native Linux and Unix operating systems, Microsoft Services for Unix, as well as XenData software.
